In the scientific approach to solving a crime, the analysis of DNA plays a crucial role.

The development of this technique and its rapid effectiveness in solving criminal cases ranks it among the cutting-edge technologies that leave very little room for a criminal to hide their traces.

THE CRIME LAB collaborates with specialized scientists, including Medical Experts, Molecular Biologists, Geneticists, and Forensic Experts in the fields of Biological Material Identification and DNA Analysis, registered with Greek and International Judicial Authorities, and members of International Associations of Forensic & Medical Genetics.

The services provided include:

Paternity / Biological Relationship Verification

To determine the genetic profile of the participants, typically 24 autosomal genetic markers (24 STR) are analyzed. More complex cases of relationship (e.g., half-siblings, uncle-nephew, etc.) require the study of up to 44 autosomal genetic markers (44 STR) to draw a reliable conclusion. Additionally, X chromosome markers (15 X-STR) and Y chromosome markers (27 Y-STR) can be used to verify shared paternal lineage, along with the analysis of polymorphic regions of Mitochondrial DNA for verifying shared maternal lineage.

Detection of Biological Material / Genetic Material Identification – Analysis of Evidence / Suspicious Objects

Biological material can be collected and analyzed from any background, e.g., fabrics, glasses, cutlery, toothbrushes, chewing gum, hair, cigarette butts, tissues, hats, etc. Once the nature of the material is determined—whether it is blood, semen, saliva, or another substance—genetic material analysis follows. The resulting genetic profile can be compared to a suspect’s profile to determine if it originates from the same individual.

Crime Scene Management

During the management of a crime scene, Forensic Experts protect the area from external interference that could alter the information. Before any action is taken, the scene is photographed, and then thoroughly examined for appropriate evidence. The evidence is collected in special packaging and transported to the lab for analysis.

Will Authenticity Check – Determination of Letter Author

During the writing of a text, the individual’s hand continuously contacts (rubs) the paper, depositing skin cells on it. DNA analysis from a swab taken from the surface of the paper can reveal the genetic profile of the person who wrote the text. This profile can then be compared to the genetic profile of the alleged author to verify whether it is the same person or a forgery. Similarly, anonymous letter authors can be identified.

Determination of Vehicle Passenger Position in Accident Investigations
In accident investigations where it is necessary to determine who was driving, biological material is collected from areas of interest (steering wheel, handbrake, handles, seats, etc.) to identify the occupants’ positions at the time of the accident.

Bone Identification

In cases where remains are found and cannot be identified (e.g., air accidents, remains in advanced decomposition, mass graves, mixed bones in cemeteries, etc.), individuals are identified through bone analysis. This analysis requires the use of specialized equipment and the application of specific protocols.
